Comforting Yellow Dal – A Simple Everyday Recipe

If there’s one dish that brings instant comfort and warmth, it’s a bowl of homemade yellow dal. This is the kind of recipe that’s light on effort but big on flavor. It’s perfect for busy weeknights. It’s great for cozy lunches. It’s ideal when you just want something nourishing and familiar.
Here’s how I make my everyday yellow dal. It’s simple, wholesome, and topped with a flavorful tadka (tempering) of cumin, garlic, and ghee that makes it irresistible.
Ingredients
- 1 cup yellow lentils (moong dal or toor dal)
- 3 cups water (or as needed)
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
For the tadka (tempering):
- 1 tbsp ghee
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 3–4 garlic cloves, finely sliced
- A pinch of hing (asafoetida)
Instructions
- Cook the Dal:
- Rinse the yellow lentils a few times until the water runs clear.
- In a pot or pressure cooker, add the lentils along with water, turmeric, and salt.
- Cook until the dal is soft and mushy. (In a pressure cooker, this usually takes about 2–3 whistles; on the stovetop, it may take 25–30 minutes.)
- Prepare the Tadka:
- In a small pan, heat ghee on medium heat.
- Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle.
- Add sliced garlic and sauté until golden and fragrant.
- Add a pinch of hing and give it a quick stir.
- Bring it Together:
- Pour the hot tadka over the cooked dal.
- Give everything a gentle stir and let it simmer for 2–3 minutes.
- Adjust salt or water to your desired consistency.
Serving Tips
Serve hot with steamed rice, roti, or even as a light soup with a squeeze of lemon on top. It’s comfort food at its finest.
